In true NVTA style, members celebrated the
start of the year with a round robin and pot
luck after the meeting. Matt Forbes did a
great job of keeping the matches fun and
competitive. Thanks Matt!
And many thanks to Rick and Robin Hanover for
taking charge of the BBQ. There was something
for everyone and Rick proved his
multi-talents as Grill Master! As usual, all
the members brought wonderful contributions
to the buffet table.

The USTA Norcal annual "ACES" awards banquet
was held at the historic Palace Hotel in San
Francisco on Jan. 31. The event was sold out
and packed with dressed up tennis players.
After the cocktail reception in the Garden
Court, we enjoyed a fabulous dinner, the
awards ceremony and dancing.
Our NVTA president, Bob
Walsh received a glass trophy as winner of
the Volunteer for Senior Tennis Programs,
Northern California. There was thunderous
applause from the NVTA table!!
Al Facchini who has done so much to keep our
facility going also received an award as
Volunteer of the Year. Al was joined at the
celebration by his entire family
Sets Guillen was honored as Captain of the
Year for the Norcal/USTA division. Janet
Gelow Reports-Unfortunately the team couldn't
get tickets to the gala in time, so we
honored Sets with her own special night at a
party given to her by her present team. All
those who Sets had captained and co-captained
for since 2003 were invited. It was a lot
of fun with lots of food, wine, good friends
and a wonderful video put together by Sharon
Howell. So many wonderful memories. It was a
such an awesome night celebrating a wonderful
woman, who has dedicated herself to tennis
and keeping it fun and available for all of
her teammates.
Rebecca Thompson Accepted the award for best
Tennis Club on a Campus. Several of Rebecca's
students were present at the celebration.
Congratulations to all winners! We are very
lucky to have such generous volunteers who
are so committed to promoting tennis in Napa
Valley.

Captain Bob Walsh Reports-
My 3.5 senior team fondly called the
unwanted, was left
wanting today when we lost a very tough match
against Green Valley to determine who would
be last in the standings. We won that honor
with a final record of 2 wins and 12 losses.
Ned Fine and Stan Boehm won 6-4, 6-2 in the
number one doubles spot, Gene Dick & Ira
Smith lost 7-6, 6-4 in the number two spot
and Telford Terry & Bob Walsh lost 7-5, 7-5
in third doubles. So we had fun, I think in,
our first venture as 3.5 rated players.
Captain Lorraine Fazzolare Reports-With our
less than stellar record this season, it
wasn't as much fun to do a recap of every
match. But we still managed to play great
tennis, have fun and meet some new players...
We ended our 4.0 Senior season with a bang.
You might even say, it was a Valentine's Day
Massacre. After rescheduling the last match 4
times due to rain, we just wanted to end our
season. The opposing captain scheduled our
last match late in the afternoon on
Valentine's Day. Special thanks to Ann
Smith, Yong, Cheryl, Cindi and Hunter for
agreeing to play and we won all three matches
ending our season with six huge smiles.
Having never played in the Marin League, we
came across some very tough competition.
While the scores weren't always favorable and
the drives back home were spent shaking our
heads wondering how we lost the match, we did
find ourselves challenged and enjoyed
competing at a higher level. Next year we
will be ready for the Marin ladies. We ended
the season in 5th place--which sounds much
better than next-to-last-place, doesn't it?
We had such a great team this season and our
team was rounded with players from Napa, St.
Helena, Calistoga and Sonoma. We will
continue to build the 4.0 team at NVTA, we
will be sad to see Yong move on to 4.5 next
season but happy that her dedication to the
sport has been recognized.
We're always looking for 4.0 women to join
our adult season team (which starts in late
March), and if you are interested, please
contact Lorraine (napa10s@gmail.com) or Gila.
I want to thank everyone for a fun season and
a lot of competitive tennis. You were all
great (and patient with all the rainouts) and
we'll go after them again next year.

If you are the last to leave the courts,
please make sure the gates are closed and
locked. We have found them left open
overnight several times recently as well as
the clubhouse doors. Vandalism
has been a big problem in the past and we have
spent a great deal of money on secure
fencing and motion lights. PLEASE help keep
your courts in good condition by locking up!
None of us want extra repair expenses, right?
